Family & Legacy

A house on Mora Road

Professor Mora with colleagues and students
"Education remained central to the Mora family's tradition."

His father, the late Dr. Abdurrahman Mora (1916–1997), was among the first four most educated Northern Nigerians of his generation — alongside Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Yahaya Gusau and Mallam Bello Kano — and in 1952 became the first Northern Nigerian granted a United States Department of State fellowship. He rose from classroom teacher to Headmaster of Zaria Middle School, then Provincial Education Officer and Adult Education Officer for the whole of the Northern Region, before a diplomatic career that took him to the Nigerian Embassy in Jeddah and, from 1967 to 1971, to Islamabad as Nigeria's High Commissioner to Pakistan. He later served as a Federal Permanent Secretary before devoting his final years, until his death in 1997, to the Zaria Education Development Association, which he chaired from its founding in 1992.

Ten of his children and grandchildren followed him through Barewa College, Zaria, and forty-two through Ahmadu Bello University — among them doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and accountants — a legacy that Professor Mora has carried forward through his own decades of teaching, mentorship, and alumni leadership.
